1957 Ford Thunderbird
1957 Ford Thunderbird. Black with black & white interior. 292 V8 with three-speed manual gearbox, factory hard and soft top and wire wheels. This is the ultra-rare “C-Bird” and is in outstanding condition, having benefited from a frame off restoration, with full documentation including a print-photo history and CD Rom photo-file. The “C” engine code makes this fine ’57 one of only 3300 units built to this specification – a very small percentage of the 21,380 cars produced that year, and an even smaller percentage of the 53,166 total production of two-seat ‘Birds. Every detail of this car speaks to the quality of the restoration – from flawless chrome and immaculate interior, to the fully detailed engine bay and undercarriage, this C – code Thunderbird would be a welcome addition to any collection.
It was no surprise that the original two-seat Thunderbird was a huge success, essentially creating its own market niche as the very first “Personal Car”. Motor Trend's Detroit editor, Don McDonald wrote "Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the new Ford Thunderbird is the clever wedding of sports car functionalism with American standards of comfort". The 1957 Thunderbird included a restyled front grille, rear deck and new bumpers. It was the first two-seat ‘bird to have a fully padded dash surface. The "C" series engine code was rated at 212 horsepower, and available only with the 3-speed manual transmission. “C” code cars typically had few options, when most Thunderbirds were ordered “fully loaded” – making the “C” coded cars much rarer today.
Our Thunderbird is truly one of the nicest around, in one of the most desirable color combination available on a two-seat Thunderbird – black on black & white. The 292 V8 fires instantly, and settles into a pleasant burbling idle from the dual through-bumper exhausts. Find a nice oldies station on the factory AM/FM radio, and head out onto the open road. The clutch is light and smooth, and the three-speed ‘box shifts precisely. Enjoy the reflections in the glossy black paint on the outside, while admiring the engine-turned dash, full instrumentation and side panel detailing on the inside. There’s room for just you and a special someone in this special Thunderbird – so enjoy!
