Featuring modern, Harley Earl-directed styling and clear design cues inspired by Lockheeds sleek P-38 Lightning fighter plane of wartime fame, the low-slung new Oldsmobiles rode on a new X-member frame and four-wheel coil-spring suspension providing impressive ride and handling quality for the era. For 1949 through 1951, Oldsmobile dominated NASCAR competition with its all-new Rocket OHV V-8 engine and its V-8 road models delivered impressive power and speed as arguably the first muscle cars produced. GMs renowned 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was improved and made standard equipment on the top-of-the-line 98 models by 1949. Oldsmobile sales grew rapidly as a direct result of these welcome developments and record sales resulted by 1950.
