Introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the W113 series Mercedes-Benz 230SL replaced both the 300SL and 190SL and exerted great influence as the companys new single-platform sports car. Fast-rising designer Paul Bracq penned the new SLs bodylines, including its sturdy Pagoda style removable hardtop, and Bela Barnyi engineered the vehicles industry-leading, built-in safety features. Development was overseen by legendary Mercedes-Benz personnel including Techniocal Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. Models progressed through the 2.5-liter 250SL, which heralded 4-wheel disc brakes, to the final 2.8-liter 280SL produced from November 1967 to February 1971. Development progressed through the 2.5-liter 250SL of 1967 to the final 2.8-liter 280SL produced from December 1967 to February 1971. Delivering more power, torque, and driving flexibility, the 280SL continues to reign as the most popular and usable evolution of the celebrated Pagoda SL line.

Attractively finished in factory-specified DB 903 Blue paint over Ivory upholstery, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a wonderful example, complete with a body-color Pagoda removable hardtop and Dark Blue convertible top. It continues to benefit handsomely from long-term, post-restoration service, maintenance, and storage performed by us here at The Last Detail. A copy of the Mercedes-Benz factory Data Card accompanies this original U.S.-specification 280SL, which left the factory with numerous factory options including garnish moldings for the removable Pagoda hardtop, the Code 426 combination package including power steering and a floor-shifted 4-speed automatic transmission, front/rear bumper guards, English instruments, a drivers side mirror, Becker Europa AM-FM radio, heat-insulating glass, heated rear window, and U.S.-specification Hella fog lamps with clear lenses. Correct added air conditioning provides all-weather comfort. Additional items include a roadside jack and lug wrench, plus a full spare wheel/tire combination, tool kit, and hardtop levers.

Prized and sought-after for its late-production status and many careful refinements, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is, best of all, immensely enjoyable to drive. Delivering ample power, good handling, and timeless looks, it is highly equipped with a wide array of desirable factory options, very well-detailed, and ready to collect and enjoy as intended.
