Renowned for quality and value, Buick adopted an upscale, performance-minded approach for 1931 as an entirely eight-cylinder-powered model range. Interestingly, Buick's new eight-cylinder engines were unique to each series and shared no common parts, with the exception of the upper-level Series 80 and 90. Performance was robust by early-1930s standards, establishing a Buick hallmark that would continue until the 1970s, when General Motors began adopting "corporate" engines across its various divisions.
The Century nameplate first graced a Buick model in 1936, a year that marked a true renaissance for Buick and its General Motors companions with all-steel "Turret Top" bodies, hydraulic brakes, and sleek styling that remains a design masterpiece today. This outstanding 1938 Buick Century Sport Coupe is a collector-grade example of these remarkable performance cars of the immediate prewar years. Formerly part of the renowned collection of Chuck Schneider, a prolific collector and enthusiast of classic automobiles, boats, and tractors from Michigan, the Century's odometer reads just 1,887 miles, presumably since restoration. Distinctively refinished in Corot Beige paint a correct Buick Color choice for 1938, the Century is handsomely complemented by an outstanding interior compartment trimmed in Beige broadcloth upholstery and featuring an in-dash clock and versatile folding rear jump seats.
