With the debut of the new-for-1938 model year, Ford offered a restyled passenger-car line and a new marketing approach that would continue through 1940. In addition to offering its Standard and DeLuxe models, that differed in their trim and passenger amenities, Ford now gave these two distinct car lines noticeably different bodies. Standard models would continue with the styling of the prior 1937 models, while the 1938 DeLuxe models would feature a fresh new design.
Frontal styling for the 1938 DeLuxe Fords featured a pointed nose suggestive of sailing yachts, a winning motif courtesy of Ford stylist Bob Gregorie, a former New York yacht designer, working in conjunction with Ford president Edsel Ford. Fords traditional Roadster body style was discontinued for 1938, leaving the 5-passenger DeLuxe Club Convertible as the sole Ford model offered that year with a rumble seat. These bodies were supplied by Murray and just 4,702 were produced in Model 81A form with the Flathead Ford V-8 engine.
Formerly part of the collection of Early Ford V-8 enthusiast Ron Thorne, this handsome 1938 Ford DeLuxe Club Convertible the product of a ground-up restoration and refinish in Bright Coach Maroon, complemented by a new Beige soft top and chrome artillery wheels with V-8 center caps and period style Ford-scripted Whitewall tires. Correct DeLuxe features include dual windshield wipers and dual side-mounted mirrors. The elegant passenger compartment features Dark Brown Naugahyde upholstery, complemented by the wood grain-finished dash. Upscale features and options include a rare radio and a locking glove box including a clock. The Flathead Ford V-8/3-speed manual transmission drivetrain has bee sorted for touring enjoyment under the previous ownership and the engine and surrounding engine compartment are pleasingly presented in clean, factory-correct appearance and detail.
