In the early days of competitive motorsports following WW II, the Oldsmobile name loomed large both on the street and the race track. After introducing the soon-to-be legendary "Rocket" V-8 engine in 1949, Oldsmobile proceeded to become a credible force in NASCAR and AAA stock-car racing, as well as the winner of Mexico's dangerous Carrera Panamericana open-road race in 1950. As one of the very first mass-produced overhead valve V-8 engines, Oldsmobile's Rocket V-8 was smooth and quiet, yet lent itself very well to the demands of racing. The Rocket V-8 was available in Oldsmobile's 88, Super 88, and 98 models and soon proved so popular that all of the GM division's Series 88 models became known collectively as "Rocket 88s."

While Oldsmobile remains famous for the "Rocket 88" and its starring role in kicking off the "Horsepower Wars" of the 1950s, styling was yet another of the GM division's many fortes. Following the new top-tier 98, which received new bodywork for 1948, the Series 76 and 88 lines received new "B-Body" chassis and bodies for 1949. In addition to their winning exterior designs, the new Oldsmobiles delivered great value with more comfort and convenience features than ever before. Buyers responded enthusiastically, with Oldsmobile seventh in American automobile sales rankings for 1949, rising to a solid sixth place in 1950 with nearly six percent market share that year.

Exceptionally well preserved and presented, this extremely attractive 1950 Oldsmobile 88 Sedan's odometer reads just 28,264 miles at the time of listing. According to documents accompanying the vehicle, a prior owner noted mileage in error when they obtained a title to the vehicle. In addition to the Oldsmobile's striking exterior finish and correct, if not original, cloth interior, this 88 features a very tidy and correct-appearing engine and underhood compartment. The renowned 303 CI "Rocket" V-8 engine delivers its power to the road through an equally renowned GM Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission. Notably, both the VIN tag and GM body plate remain affixed to the vehicle. In addition to gleaming chrome trim and brightwork, this collector-grade Oldsmobile rides on a set of 1950s-style whitewall tires on correctly finished wheels. Other highlights include the rear-fender skirts and rock guards, in-dash clock, and period style chrome exhaust deflector. Rightly regarded as one of the finest American cars of the postwar years, this 1950 Oldsmobile 88 Sedan is ready for you to collect, show and enjoy.
