Buick has occupied an enviable position within the GM hierarchy throughout its history by selling prestigious, well-equipped, and profitable mid-to-upper-level cars. By 1954, record calendar-year production drove Buick to third place in American sales rankings, right behind high-volume Chevrolet and Ford. The newly released Century lineup contributed strongly to Buick's remarkable 1950s success story.
Reprising a nameplate first used between 1936 and 1942, the Century was Buick's performer for 1955, combining the powerful 322 CI "Nailhead" V-8 engine of the Roadmaster with the lighter-weight body and chassis of the Special. Power ratings for the Century were 200 and then 236 horsepower for 1954 and 1955. A highly respected road car easily capable of 100-mph freeway cruising, hence its name, the Century foreshadowed the big engine/lightweight body formula of the "muscle car" era yet to come. The Century's performance was so strong that during a road test conducted by
Motor Trend magazine, it out-accelerated even the mighty 300-HP Chrysler C-300! Passenger comfort was excellent as well, in keeping with the Century's handsome exterior styling, replete with front-fender "Ventiports," sweeping chrome bodyside moldings, and front-bumper "Dagmar" bullets.
This 1955 Buick Century Riviera 2-door hardtop is the product of an older, comprehensive rotisserie restoration and build that still presents very well. Ample power is delivered by a 322 CI "Nailhead" V-8 engine, equipped with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, paired with a Dynaflow automatic transmission. Vintage Air provides a comfortable experience. Finished in striking 2-tone Red and White paint, the Century also features a matching color combination to the interior compartment. Chrome bumpers and steel wheels mounting full polished wheel covers and 1950s-style wide Whitewall tires provide the finishing touches. Benefiting from garage storage when not in use, this 1955 Buick Century illustrates the high-end GM division's longstanding success formula very nicely.
