As the final evolution of MG's famed and influential prewar 'Midget', the 1953-1555 TF remained close to its delightful stylistic roots with select visual refinements while offering a far better driving experience with many mechanical updates. Among them were the independent front suspension and improved chassis ushered in by the prior TD Mk II. Early TFs were powered by MG's long-running XPAG 1,250cc engine, succeeded for the last 1954-55 cars produced by the 63-horsepower, 1,500-cc XPEG engine. While its run was relatively brief, the TF was particularly successful in America's rabid sports-car market and bought its maker precious time while the new envelope-bodied MGA was under development. According to MG marque experts, just 6,200 examples of the TF were produced.
Simply handsome and restored to concours-ready standards with no possible expense spared by The Last Detail over the two years spanning January 2020 and December 2021, this 1955 MG TF is quite likely one of, if not the, finest example in existence anywhere today. According to the accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, this MG TF is an original U.S.-delivery, left-hand drive example, built 9-10 March, 1955. Factory-finished in Black paint Cellulose to the body and Synthetic to the fenders, over a Green-upholstered cockpit, this TF 1500 maintains this color combination as offered today.
Wonderful known history was compiled by the Seller and picks up in 1960, when this TF 1500 was traded in to Auto-Land, the dealership of his Grandfather. Given to his son as a daily driver, with the 1500 cc XPEG engine rebuilt by the dealership's master mechanic at approximately 42,000 miles. The TF was retained by the dealer's son through his high school years and then sold to Carlo, a family friend who lived nearby. In 1981, Carlo called and asked if the family wanted to repurchase the TF, which they did, with the Seller's father buying the car for our Seller's 6
th birthday as a Father-Son restoration project, which was completed in 1990. Refinished in Aston Martin British Racing Green with a Tan interior and chrome wire wheels, the MG earned People's Choice at a large meet held in the Chicago suburbs. The MG remained in the family until 2010, when it was sold by the Seller's dad to a resident of Oak Park, Illinois.
In 2019, our Seller saw an advertisement for his beloved TF from a dealer in St. Charles, Illinois, on consignment from a gentleman from Oak Park, with the car noted as being largely untouched since its 1990 father-son restoration. The car was immediately repurchased, and The Last Detail was commissioned to restore the beloved MG to concours-worthy standards with virtually no possible expense spared. During the restoration, the car's exterior was returned to its factory-specified Black finish, with the cockpit restored using Green upholstery in a shade slightly darker than original. The wire wheels were painted Black. For improved performance and driving ease, the factory 4-speed gearbox was replaced with a 5-speed conversion supplied by the MG specialists at Moss Motors. All restoration invoices documenting the work performed will accompany the sale of this truly splendid 1955 MG TF 1500 Roadster.
Long renowned for its classic styling, sporty driving experience, and racing heritage, the TF is the last MG of its kind, with heritage dating to the original "Midgets" of the 1930s.
