LEGENDARY 1950S PERFORMER
ONE OF AMERICA'S FIRST HIGH-PERFORMANCE CARS
After the close of WW II, North American automobile buyers demanded more comfort, power, and style than ever before and GM's Oldsmobile division was among the first marques to answer the call in 1948. Next, Oldsmobile launched the horsepower race with the 1949 release of its all-new and powerful overhead-valve "Rocket" V-8 engine. For 1956, Oldsmobile's styling formula expanded upon the principles laid down in the last major redesign of 1954, including a chic wraparound windshield and jet aircraft-inspired design cues. The rapidly developing "Rocket" V-8 engine now displaced 324 cubic inches and delivered a stout factory-rated 230 horsepower for the 88, with GM's Super Hydra-Matic automatic transmission optional for the 88 series.
While the 88 was Oldsmobile?s entry-level model line, it offered a versatile range of body styles including traditional 2- and 4-door sedans and Holiday 2 and 4-door hardtop sedans. Offering more standard features than most competing marques, the 88 included such premium items as armrests, bumper guards, a lined trunk, rotary door latches, dual horns, a cigarette lighter, turn signals, rubber floor mats, aluminum door sill plates, and sun visors. A rainbow-like palette of 21 paint colors was available with 26 two-done combinations and upholstery choices included pattern cloth with a wide array of colors and trim materials.
Very nicely representing the performance, looks, and value represented by Oldsmobile's very successful and upscale Super 88 model line for 1956, this captivating example is finished in an unusual and flamboyant 2-tone Yellow and Black color combination. The renowned 324 CI Oldsmobile "Rocket" V-8 engine carries a factory-rated 230 horsepower and has 300 miles on the engine rebuild. A Hydra-Matic automatic transmission delivers the power to the road. The exterior is nicely complemented by the Black and White 2-tone interior treatment. Features, options, and amenities are numerous and include a power-adjustable front bench seat plus rare factory air conditioning, power window lifts, power steering, and power brakes with updated disc brakes up front. The windshield wipers have been converted to more reliable electric operation. Additional highlights include an AM radio and dash-mounted clock. Other features include Oldsmobile's "Rocket" hood mascot, chrome bumpers and trim, plus steel wheels mounting full-size wheel covers and new 1950s-style wide Whitewall tires. Additional items include an original owner's manual and original 1956 Oldsmobile shop manual.
