Based on the XK120 and updated with several choice improvements, Jaguar's XK140 stands as a true icon and an ideal classic sports car for those who love to drive. According to experts, 8,943 examples of the XK140 were produced in all for 1954-57, with the top-of-the-line Drophead Coupe (DHC) the rarest among them with 2,793 built. While the XK140 was already a potent performer with its DOHC 3.4-liter engine, the ultimate version was the 'SE,' signifying the "Special Equipment" option. Also known as the XK140 MC, this ultimate XK140 variant delivered excellent performance with 210 BHP on tap at 5,750 rpm, courtesy of a free-flowing C-Type cylinder head. Other choice features included wire-spoke wheels plus twin fog lamps, Laycock overdrive, and a low restriction twin-outlet exhaust system.
Carrying Chassis Number S818170. this 1957 Jaguar XK140 SE Drophead Coupe is an outstanding example of Jaguar's top-of-the-line sports model of the mid-1950s. Built on 18 November 1955 and dispatched on 13 December 1955 to Jaguar Cars, New York, this original U.S.-specification XK140 SE was purchased by its first owner, Henry Rex Beamer, a resident of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A total concours-quality restoration was completed during the 1990s for a subsequent owner resident in Lake Charles, New York, who of course had the Jaguar properly stored in climate-controlled conditions when not in use. The Jaguar passed in 2007 to a new owner in Marietta, Georgia, who continued the preservation and care of its restoration. In 2012, the XK140 was acquired from New Jersey by the current owner in January 2011.
Beautifully presented and the subject of more than $195k in further restoration and maintenance work in addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, this XK140 MC has achieved exceptional success in a long list of judged concours events and venues. Among its many honors, the Jaguar earned its AACA First Junior award in 2013, followed by the Senior Award I 2014, the E.F. Edge National Award in 2014, First Grand National Award in 2016, the Senior Grand National and Second Preservation Award both in 2019, and the Repeat Annual Grand National Award in 2019.
Under JCNA (Jaguar Clubs North America) judging from 2015 through 2021, this XK140 MC scored 9 First in Class awards, plus the 2016 Illinois Jaguar Concours People's Choice Award. It also received three consecutive North Central Region Divisional Championship Awards (2017-2019) with 99.78/100, 99.46/100, and 99.845/100 scores respectively. Independent Concours wins included People's Choice at the Palatine, Illinois British Car Festival in 2012, the Excellence, Premier, and Best in Class awards at the 2017 Milwaukee Masterpiece, and the 2021 Championship Award from the Copsaholm Concours d'Elegance at South Bend, Indiana.
In addition to the stunning, multiple award-winning restoration and condition of this high-specification XK140 MC, it is equipped with a highly desirable 5-speed manual gearbox, unlocking even greater performance than the stock specification. An aluminum radiator enhances engine cooling. Other desirable features include a discreetly mounted modern radio, beautiful fitted luggage, transistorized ignition, an upgraded alternator that looks like the original, power-assisted front disc brakes, a tonneau cover, and a top-quality stainless steel exhaust system. Accompanying this prolific award winner are numerous desirable items including two full sets of keys, a show radiator cap and extra shifter knob, the original gearbox (boxed and crated), owner?s manuals and an Alpine audio manual, a JDHT (Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust) certificate, itemized lists of awards and restoration/maintenance costs, and photographs.
