Produced from 1961 to 1963, the third-generation Thunderbird benefited from relentless improvements and updates throughout its brief production run. Four models were available for 1961-63, including the Hardtop, formal Landau Hardtop, Convertible, and, from 1962, the Sports Roadster. Along with exterior updates including a new vertical-bar grille and revisions to the body sides and taillights, the 1963 Thunderbird included additional sound-deadening material, a quieter, longer-life exhaust system, and upgrades to the electrical system and accessories for improved reliability. Accordingly, the final-year "Bullet" Thunderbirds for 1963 are particularly sought-after by today's classic Thunderbird collectors.
Powered by a 300 HP 390 CI Thunderbird V-8 engine topped by the original Autolite 4-barrel carburetor and a an engine dress-up kit added by the original selling dealer, this 1963 Ford Thunderbird Convertible is a simply outstanding example with an incredibly detailed and well preserved restoration completed by Thunderbird specialist Jim Wulf in 2009 that earned it the AACA Junior Award at Hershey, PA in October 2009, followed by AACA Senior Award honors in the Spring of 2010. Provenance includes delivery new to McCafferty Ford in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, in September 1962, confirmed by the factory-issued Gate Release when it left Ford Motor Company's exclusive Wixom, Michigan Thunderbird assembly plant. The Thunderbird was Mrs. McCafferty's personal and highly prized personal vehicle.
Finished in factory-specified Heritage Burgundy paint over correct Pearl Beige Metallic upholstery, the Thunderbird is graced by painstakingly and correctly restored interior and exterior trim, plus correctly re-plated and refinished hardware throughout the vehicle. An added Sports Roadster rear tonneau, five original 48-spoke Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels, and optional rear-fender skirts lend additional grace. Even the trunk is meticulously detailed, and the convertible-top mechanism features all-new hydraulic cylinders, a new hydraulic pump, and new hoses. Correct details extend to the rare and complete 1963 Thunderbird exhaust system. Collector-grade throughout, this 1963 Ford Thunderbird Convertible is one of the finest we have ever offered for sale, being ready to show and, best of all, enjoy.
