Initially conceived as the La Salle II, the Buick Riviera was a personal-luxury model based on the General Motors XP-715 concept car styled by Ned Nickles under the direction of GM design chief Bill Mitchell. Based on a shortened and narrowed Buick chassis frame, the stylish Riviera featured smartly tailored bodylines including knife-edge design cues inspired by contemporary Rolls-Royce models. When Cadillac management wasnt interested, Buick took over the project, named it Riviera and commenced production for 1963. Powering the Riviera was Buicks famed Nailhead V-8 engine and mechanicals included massive Al-Fin drum brakes, quick-ratio power steering and sophisticated underpinnings, resulting in one of the best-handling and performing American luxury cars of the era. The Riviera was highly acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic and a strong seller during its first three production years as a highly desirable alternative to Fords Thunderbird and Chryslers 300 series. Changes for Riviera's sophomore year were limited, most noticeably with newly exposed quad headlamps.

Powered by the optional dual-carbureted 425 CI/360 HP engine, this highly original and attractive 1964 Riviera was recently acquired at just under 50,000 miles and retains the remarkably original interior. Highly equipped with factory options, featuring a floor-shifted automatic transmission, AM/FM radio with power antenna, console, courtesy lights, front bucket seats, air conditioning and lap belts, plus power-assisted brakes, steering and windows. The rare high-performance, dual-carbureted engine is matching numbers, original to the car and nicely detailed. A full spare, roadside jack and tools occupy the trunk compartment. The owners manual and Buick Vehicle Protection Plan booklet are included. A thorough evaluation, sorting and detailing were most recently performed at The Last Detail. In all, this 1964 Buick Riviera is a very nicely presented and preserved example of one of the most important postwar American automobile designs, with power and luxury to match.
