In 1963, Alfa Romeo found the need to update the slightly aging Giulietta model, and thus the Giulia was born. Visually, the two cars were very similar, but the newer Giulia featured a revised hood with chrome hood scoop trim, as well as a new steering wheel and white on black gauge faces. The larger change came from the new 1600cc engine, producing 104 horsepower. Rare for a production car of its time was the .72 overdrive 5 speed transmission. In 1964 and 1965 the limited, high performance Veloce model was produce in very limited numbers, with only a 1,091 Spider Veloces being produced, and far fewer in existence today. This contrasts with the much less rare Spider Normale, with production numbers at 8,950. The Veloce featured a fully revised powertrain. The engine had different camshafts, higher compression pistons, a pair of dual-throat side-draft Webers, tubular headers that tapered into an expansion chamber and two-piece aluminum sump with an integral cooling maze, which combined to produce 129 bhp. In addition, the final drive ratio was decreased from 5.12:1 to 4.56:1 to increase highway cruising comfort and raise the Giulias top speed. Externally, the only difference is the addition of the 1600 Veloce and Alfa Romeo block letter badges. This car was originally brought to us over 10 years ago for a TLD evaluation. At that time, the only repairs required were an exterior refinishing, due to severe paint oxidation and deterioration. Upon full bare metal paint preparation, we determined that this car had never had a panel previously repaired or had any signs of rust or corrosion at any point, a rarity for this particular model. Our standard TLD concours quality finish was then applied. All undercarriage, interior, trunk, and engine compartments retain the factory original finishes and are in exceptional condition. We recently completed a full service to prepare this Veloce for sale, consisting of a carburetor rebuild, flushing and changing all fluids, a replacement of the brakes, and an overall mechanical inspection. All equipment and gauges appear fully functional and all mechanicals are in excellent working order. The current mileage of 58993 is believed to be original, and is only approximately 4000 miles higher than when we first evaluated the car. In addition, new leather seats and a new canvas top and tonneau cover were installed. The originality and quality of this car would be extremely difficult to reproduce.
