Introduced in April 1964, Ford's sporty new Mustang created an overnight sensation and remains the subject of the most successful new-car launch of all time. Predictably, performance was part of the Mustang formula and starting April 1964, the soon-to-be famous K-code Hi-Po 289 cubic-inch V-8 engine was available with 271 factory-rated horsepower. Available only with a 4-speed manual transmission, Mustang's hot new powerplant option also included the Handling Package with stiffer springs, shocks and front stabilizer bar, plus 14-inch Red band tires and Ford's 9-inch rear axle. The sleek 2+2 Fastback body style arrived by September 1964 and with K-Code power, it gained everlasting fame as the basis for Carroll Shelby's legendary 1965-67 SCCA B-Production championship-winning GT350.
The product of a comprehensive rotisserie restoration, this 1965 Ford Mustang 2+2 Fastback carries the all-important K VIN digit denoting its Hi-Po 289/271 HP V-8 engine, matched to a 4-speed manual transmission and 3.50 rear end.
