SOPHISTICATED 1960s OLDSMOBILE MUSCLE

Many enthusiasts have argued that Oldsmobile created the first "muscle car" in 1949, but it was not until 1964 that Oldsmobile returned to the concept, encouraged by the success of Pontiac's GTO. Oldsmobile was the first GM division to follow Pontiac's lead, beginning in 1964 with the $136 RPO B09 option package, previously known as the "Police Apprehender Pursuit" package applied to the new F-85 Cutlass. Logically, the '442' nameplate signified the car's 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed manual transmission, and dual exhaust pipes. Immediately, the '442' codename was part of America's high-performance lexicon.

For 1965, the 442 option returned with a new 400 cubic-inch engine, and while its 345 horsepower output was competitive with the GTO, the balance, excellent handling, and driving experience of the 442 gained praise in contemporary road tests. The 442-specific upgrades included wider tires and heavy-duty versions of the shock absorbers, springs, clutch, and battery, plus front and rear stabilizer bars. Sales of the 442 reached 25,003 for 1965, thanks to stronger marketing and the growing performance reputation of this "gentleman’s hot rod."

This Lansing, Michigan-built 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Convertible clearly benefits handsomely from a frame-off restoration. Featuring a distinctive Mojave Mist exterior finish and trimmed in Fawn upholstery – both reflecting the original GM paint and trim codes on the car's body plate beneath the hood, it is powered by an upgraded 425 CI V-8 engine that maintains a factory appearance, paired with a rare and desirable 4-speed manual transmission driving a limited-slip rear end. Power brakes and power steering deliver a relaxed cruising experience. Other highlights include front bucket seats, a center console, and original AM radio. Hurst-style gold-center wheels deliver additional appeal.

If you're looking for an uncommon and highly attractive mid-1960s GM muscle car with the restoration already completed, this rare 4-speed 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Convertible is ready to own, cruise, and enjoy.
