Launched for 1960, the compact, rear-engine Corvair was a truly unique automobile and a daring leap for Chevrolet. Initially offered with a wide array of body styles, including sedans, convertibles, and wagons, plus van and pickup variants by 1961, the Corvair provided buyers with a sophisticated alternative to the Volkswagens and other small European cars imported in growing numbers to North America during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Agile and fun-to-drive, the Corvair featured an air-cooled 'flat-6' engine at the rear and fully independent suspension. Interestingly, the Corvair and its early success motivated Ford Motor Company's product planners to spearhead the compact Falcon-based Mustang. Corvair styling was thoroughly revised with the latest cues from GM's renowned studios for 1965, and 1966 was the last model year for the three-level Corvair series, ranging from the 500 to the Monza and Corsa. Offered in 2-door hardtop Sport coupe and 4-door hardtop Sport Sedan body styles, the 500 delivered traditional Chevrolet value with abundant standard and optional features.
This 1966 Chevrolet Corvair is a fabulously preserved and presented example of the sporty Monza Sport Coupe body style, with just 9,843 miles at the time of writing. Powered by the optional 110-horsepower version of the Corvair's famous air-cooled 164 cubic-inch "Flat-6" engine, this Corvair Monza Sport Coupe also features Chevrolet's 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission with a distinctive dash-mounted 'T' handle shift lever. Sporting a Silver paint finish, the Corvair is well equipped with a Black bucket-seat interior, plus tinted glass, a Motorola Solid State pushbutton AM radio, and steel wheels mounting full-size wheel covers and White stripe tires. Documents include the original dealer-issued Protect-O-Plate warranty card and warranty booklet, plus an original 1966 Corvair owner's manual.
