With the debut of the new 230SL at Geneva in 1963, Mercedes-Benz embarked on a new single-platform policy for its sports cars, with the svelte new SL replacing the 300SL and 190SL at one stroke. Sportier than the 190SL while less costly and complex than the 300SL, the new 2.3-liter 230SL was internally designated W113. Bodylines were penned by Paul Bracq and Bela Barnyi engineered a host of built-in safety features. With form following function, the new SLs optional hardtop offered high strength and its unique shape inspired new cars enduring Pagoda nickname. Available for purchase from summer 1963, the 230SL shared its mechanical package with the contemporary 220 SEb (W111/3) line with power delivered by a fuel-injected SOHC inline six. Fully independent suspension and dual-circuit brakes were other highly sophisticated features.

The larger-displacement 2.5-liter 250SL was introduced at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show and ushered in such improvements as improved seat belts, a collapsible steering-column, and four-wheel disc brakes. Produced only from November/December 1966 to January 1968, the 250SL is the rarest of Mercedes W113 series with only 5,196 built in all. In addition to delivering greater flexibility with increased horsepower output and torque, the 250SL nonetheless retained the stiffer suspension and sporty, responsive feel of the 230SL before it, making the 250SL an ideal choice for enthusiastic drivers.

This wonderful and meticulously maintained 1967 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a quality example with just two owners from new and single-family ownership and care since 1970. Retaining its original color combination, this 250SL continues to benefit from an older repaint and newer soft top, while the interior is original with the exception of reupholstered seats. An impressive dossier of service and maintenance records and receipts is complemented by the original window sticker and other literature. In addition to the factory-issued manuals, the SL includes the Pagoda removable hardtop, tool kit, lug wrench, and full-size spare wheel/tire. Factory options include an AM/FM radio, power brakes and power steering. A quality stainless steel exhaust system is a desirable upgrade over stock. The speedometer was replaced in 1986; however, mileage should be progressively documented by the many service records accumulated since 1970. A recent service and detailing ensures the 250SL will deliver a great driving experience and look great on the open road. A truly rare, high-quality example of a Mercedes-Benz legend, this 1967 Mercedes-Benz 280SL simply must be seen and experienced first-hand. Call us today to see it, obtain full details, and prepare to make it yours for all the summer and fall driving enjoyment still in store this year!
