With the debut of the new 230SL at Geneva in 1963, Mercedes-Benz embarked on a new single-platform policy for its sports cars, with the svelte new SL replacing the 300SL and 190SL at one stroke. Sportier than the 190SL while less costly and complex than the 300SL, the new 2.3-liter 230SL was internally designated W113.
