On October 6, 1966, the revolutionary front-drive Eldorado hit dealer showrooms, the product of GM design studies beginning with the 1962 XP-727. Variable-ratio power steering and automatic rear level control heightened the Eldorado's premium, GT-style experience. Eldorado's fit and finish were outstanding, its interiors plush, and a huge array of color combinations was available. An instant hit, the first-generation FWD Eldorado enjoyed high demand, with eager buyers accepting long wait times and snapping up 17,930 examples in 1967, followed by 24,528 in 1968, 23,333 in 1969, and 28,842 in 1970.
