The GTO was originally introduced in 1964 by engineers Bill Collins and the famed John De Lorean as an option package to the LeMans targeted toward the performance minded youth market. It was an instant success, and by 1966 had become a model of its own. The second generation of GTOs came about in 1968. The new model moved away from the older coke bottle styling toward a more modern fastback style. For the next year, some minor cosmetic changes were made, but the overall shape remained. The GTO remained in production until 1974. The Pontiac GTO is the premiere icon of the American muscle car era, and looking upon it you will be reminded of a more pure time in domestic car history. Sliding in, the bucket seat wraps around you, and the 4-speed shifter fits comfortably in your hand. Turn the key, and the big V8 roars to life quickly. Throw the top down with the push of a button, and you are off. Exactly the ride you would expect greets you, with classic handling and power to spare. Truly an astounding example of an American classic.
