Having served their respective purposes by winning the SCCA Trans-Am championship and duking it out neck-and-neck with Chryslers wing cars in NASCAR competition, Ford retired the Boss 302 and Boss 429 Mustangs in 1970. Both were succeeded in one stroke for 1971 by the Mustang Boss 351, featuring low, wide, and aggressive new flatback body styling predicted by the Mach 1 show car of just a few years before. The new Boss included more of everything that made its predecessors great, including more balanced handling with better weight distribution and outstanding performance from its new free-breathing, Cleveland-based solid-lifter Boss 351 engine offering greater flexibility and all-around drivability with 330 factory-rated horsepower on tap. Only one transmission was available Fords virtually bulletproof Toploader 4-speed manual unit. Drivability was markedly improved over that of the peakier, smaller-displacement 1970 Boss 302 and Boss 351 performance was awesome, including 0-60 mph times under 6.0 seconds and the quarter mile dash in 14 seconds flat or better. Road Test magazine summed the Boss 351 up best, stating The 71 Boss is 40 hp bossier than last years 302 (and) still gives fine handling coupled to straightaway performance.

This vehicle is 1 of just 1,806 Boss 351s produced for 1971 and 1 of only an estimated 630 known to exist today per the Boss 351 Registry. While it left the assembly line in Bright Blue paint, this Boss was repainted Black in 1983. A lifelong Tennessee car with just one owner since it was purchased new until most recently, this top-notch Boss 351 clearly benefits from restoration to OEM condition performed during the early 2000s by Stacys Concours Restorations and it continues to sport a Black finish over the originally specified Black vinyl interior featuring bucket front seats. Welcome factory options include power steering and an AM radio. The potent Boss 351 powerplant retains matching numbers. In addition to a spare wheel/tire, roadside jack and lug wrench, this stellar Boss 351 also includes an Owners Manual, Window Sticker copy, dealer brochure, a written account of the cars history, and a Marti Report confirming original data. While the Boss 351 is indeed very rare today, this excellent example is even more so with single-family ownership and care from new. As offered, this 1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351 stands as one of the finest fruits of Ford Motor Companys all-out Total Performance campaign that dominated virtually everywhere the company chose to compete.
