As one of the most iconic sports cars of all time, the 911S is the roadgoing foundation of Porsches dominance in international circles from its debut for 1967 to today. First available in 1967, the S ushered in a multitude of high-performance upgrades and immediately earned the respect of driving enthusiasts and GT-class racers worldwide, with unmatched response to driver inputs. FIA rule changes and a move away from prototypes to GT cars at Porsche made the 911S the basis for the companys works racing program by 1972 and it served as the basis for the competition-oriented Carrera 2.7 RS. In addition to its race-winning performance, the 911S also gained fame on the silver screen, with Hollywood legend Steve McQueen driving his personal car through rural France in the opening sequences of his 1971 cult classic film, Le Mans.

Consistent with Porsche tradition, the 911 was relentlessly improved, with more predictable handling courtesy of a slight wheelbase extension for 1969. These more attractive long hood models were produced in several levels of tune through 1973, with body styles including the basic 911 Coupe and the 911 Targa, which combined the open-air enjoyment of a convertible with the safety of a built-in roll hoop at the rear of the passenger compartment. Following an engine-displacement increase to 2.4 liters for 1972, performance was further enhanced for 1973 with the new, stronger Type 915 5-speed gearbox, with Bosch mechanical fuel injection across the board for all 911 models delivered to the USA. In addition to several detail updates, a discreet air spoiler underneath the front bumper of the 911S delivered improved high-speed stability.

According to Porsche experts, just 925 examples of the 911S Targa were produced in all for 1973, making this high-specification performer considerably rarer than the contemporary Carrera 2.7 RS. And, with its 190-HP Type 911/53 engine, the 911S delivers much of the thrilling performance of its RS stablemate, without sacrificing comfort and priced at a much more attractive value range. Numbered 9113310214, this 1973 Porsche 911S Targa is a very special example that retains its factory-specified color combination of Silver Metallic paint over Blue Leather to Sample upholstery. While already an uncommon, high-end sports car, this 911S Targa was equipped with 10 factory options including US Equipment, Tinted Glass All Around, high-performance Koni Shocks, extremely rare M409 Sport Seats (L/R), an Additional Cooling Coil, a Manual Radio Antenna with Noise Suppression, and Michelin XWX tires.

Having spent most of its life in Southern California with three prior owners, followed by 10 years in North Carolina, this 1973 Porsche 911S Targa accumulated 126,000 miles from new until 2005, when it was given a comprehensive, ground-up restoration. Consistent with the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity on file, the vehicle retains all matching numbers. The rust-free bodyshell was completely dismantled and a proper two-year preparation and paint process was completed in the factory-correct Silver Metallic. The 2.4L engine was completely rebuilt by the Porsche experts at Aase Motors, Fullerton, California and performs flawlessly with the refurbished original fuel injection system. The 5-speed Type 915 transaxle was rebuilt and equipped with an 80% limited-slip differential by Jim Privett Motorsports.
Select upgrades are numerous and make the driving experience even better than original, including a Centerforce dual-friction clutch, Fidanza flywheel, 22mm front and rear Automotion sway bars, Porsche RSR struts, Bilstein inserts all around, SAW performance 28mm Sway-a-Way torsion bars, Turbo upper/lower valve covers, all silicone gaskets, and Dansk original-style polished stainless steel exhaust system including stainless steel SSI heat exchangers. A Billy Boat aluminum front oil cooler was professionally installed, with receipts to confirm.
In addition to the aforementioned Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche confirming the matching numbers engine and transmission, this investment-grade 1973 Porsche 911S Targa is offered with an original Owners Manual with Red cover and two document binders containing restoration invoices and details, plus service records dating back to 1998 including a pre-purchase inspection report from Aase Motors. Full details of the engine and transmission rebuild, as well as the fine points of this incredibly detailed restoration are also included with the car for review by prospective purchasers. Crucially, this stellar 1973 Porsche 911S Targa retains the original floors, battery boxes, and body pans in very good condition. The dash is an NOS unit with zero cracks or blemishes, the radio antenna is a proper factory-type Hirschmann unit, and the seller states the vehicles clock has always remained in working order.
Prior to its listing for sale, this 911S Targa was sent to Black Forest Racing for a complete review and service. In addition to an oil change, the engine and transaxle were removed, reviewed, and expertly serviced to ensure the car runs and shifts precisely as it should. The seller advises us that in mechanical and cosmetic terms, all work performed on this car under his stewardship has always been done with an open checkbook ensuring its readiness to be enjoyed as originally intended. Simply put, this 1973 Porsche 911S Targa is an outstanding example of one of the finest and rarest models ever to come from Stuttgart.
