Debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show and first available for 1970, the 914 was Porsches successor to the 912 and Stuttgarts new competitor to the growing ranks of sports cars from Datsun, Fiat, MG, and Triumph. Developed under Ferdinand A. Butzi Porsche, the 914 was rooted in sketches by Hans Gugelot and featured a distinctive Karmann-built body with removable Targa roof and built-in roll bar. Initially powered by a fuel-injected 1.7-liter engine and five-speed gearbox, the 914 featured a wide array of exterior colors with standard painted bumpers, with chrome bumpers, a vinyl roll-bar covering, and numerous other options.
