Introduced for 1968, the new mid-size W114/W115-series cars from Mercedes-Benz succeeded the W110 Fintail models that were introduced in 1961. Featuring particularly clean styling penned by prominent designer Paul Bracq, these very well-regarded Mercedes-Benz models were produced until the advent of the W123-generation cars in 1976. The W114 models were the upper-tier 6-cylinder cars, progressively designated 230, 250, and 280 in after their engine sizes, with the W115 cars using 4-cylinder gas or diesel powerplants. The W114-based 250C Coupe debuted in 1969, ultimately upgraded to 2.8-liter 280C specification. A 1973 facelift ensured the W114 cars kept pace with the demands of the U.S. export market. The W114 Coupes were produced in far lower numbers than their sedan running mates, reaching just 67,048 from 1969 to 1976. Renowned for delivering a great driving experience with purposeful, yet comfortable interiors and great looks, the W114 280C and companion models continue to attract strong demand as highly enjoyable modern classics today.

This extremely sound, well-maintained, and rust-free W114 1976 Mercedes-Benz 280C comes from three years of demanding collector care and selective restoration, only as required, to retain the cars startling overall originality. Former long-term ownership was under the noted American artist of the Southwest Thomas W. Lorimer of Arizona, who purchased the vehicle in 1986 and retained it until late 2015. Since acquisition by the current owner, the 280C has received painstaking maintenance, preservation, and service, with full sorting of the vehicles various mechanical systems for reliable operation, including the hydraulics operating the door locks and window lifts, plus installation of a new Mercedes-Benz battery and a new fuel pump.

The vehicle was incredibly well preserved as purchased by the current owner. Nonetheless, it has been selectively restored and only as required, with the seats re-upholstered using new synthetic horse-hair stuffing and the dash re-covered including correct stitching. The vehicle retains much of the factory-original paint finish, with the exception of the left-front fender and the upper half, which was repainted due to sun exposure. Professionally applied clear coat now protects the whole cars paint finish from the elements. Using OEM Mercedes-Benz parts, very attractive European-style chrome bumpers replaced the original heavy plastic-covered U.S.-specification bumpers, for a great look. Other desirable features include a new windshield, new Vredestein tires surrounding proper steel wheels with color-matched hubcaps. All told, it is a wonderful example of the sophisticated W114 Mercedes-Benz line from the last model year.

Factory-issued books/manuals, tools, and the original spare wheel/tire are included with the sale of this beautifully maintained 280C. Other features include a modern upgraded radio that looks right at home as well as A/C. Over $30k was invested in the preservation and maintenance work since it was purchased, with documents and receipts to confirm. Featuring vault-like solidity and great looks, this 1976 Mercedes-Benz 280C is a true must-see modern classic that is ready to collect and enjoy. Contact us today to see it for yourself and find out what we mean!
