Without doubt, Volkswagens Type 1 "Beetle" was the most influential compact car to land on U.S. soil after WW II. Rooted in Germany's KdF-Wagen, with the "KdF" representing "Kraft durch Freude" or "Strength through Joy," the Beetle was the product of early Project 12 experiments at Ferdinand Porsches facilities, where engineers settled on a rear-engine layout and simple platform chassis. Countless revisions yielded 30 distinct prototypes by 1935. Eventually, the Series 38 design embodied the Beetle, much as we know it today. Produced from 1938 through 2003, the Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle was remarkably similar in concept to Henry Ford's Model T an affordable "peoples car" of attractive design, economical operation, and durable construction. Swift development brought a succession of careful updates throughout production and many derivative models. The Karmann-built Cabriolet remains a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts, imported to North America through 1979.
