Totally redesigned for 1979 on GM's new 'E-body' platform shared with Buick's Riviera and Oldsmobile's Toronado, Cadillacs range-topping Eldorado entered its landmark 10
th generation with winning looks echoing the basic styling of the 1967-70 cars in a much smaller and more fuel-efficient package. In addition to a wide array of color combinations and luxurious features, the 1979-85 Eldorado ushered in such welcome updates as front-wheel drive, smaller, more fuel-efficient engines, and a new independent rear suspension. For its part, the newly downsized 1979 Eldorado was particularly successful, with stunning sales growth of 44 per cent over the year before, accounting for over 25 per cent of all Cadillacs sold for 1979. Confirming buyer demand for the modern and innovative design, the Eldorado continued to consistently enjoy high demand through 1985, with production reaching all-time highs.
