So popular was this new model that by the end of its run it accounted for almost 20% of all 911s ever produced! The 911 Carrera had always been fast, safe, reliable and the sports car for every day use. Featuring revised bodywork which resulted in better aerodynamics, and vastly improved suspension, the 993 represented the finest that Stuttgarts engineers had to offer. The 993 was the first Porsche (outside of the 959 supercar) to feature a 6 speed gear change. Probably the most noteworthy change for this iteration is the implementation of an all-alloy, multi-arm rear suspension attached to an all-alloy subframe. This setup greatly reduced the infamous tendency of earlier 911s to oversteer in corners when lifting off the throttle. Powered by the naturally aspirated 3.6 liter Vario Ram M64 engine, the 1997-1998 cars produce 285 horsepower and have a top speed of 168 MPH. Other performance modifications included dual-flow exhaust, larger brakes with drilled rotors and revised power steering. As the last of the air cooled Porsches, the 993 has become somewhat of a modern classic and thus one of the most sought after models in Porsche history.
