While Porsche may be best known for its long-running, multi-generation 911 series, the Boxster echoed the spirit of another Stuttgart icon, the 550 Spyder of the mid-1950s. Marking a return to Porsche's roots, the Boxster named after its liquid-cooled boxer-type engine and roadster bodywork was rooted in a design proposal by Grant Larson and Pinky Lai that won an internal competition at Porsche for a new sports car. The resulting Boxster Concept debuted to wide acclaim at the January 1993 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and the new model's production-bound exterior design, internally coded Type 986, was finalized in March 1993. Featuring design cues similar to those of the new Type 996 911 models, especially in terms of the front end and body sides, the new 986 Boxster was launched ahead of the "senior" Porsche, with the pilot-car production starting in the second half of 1995 and actual production in mid-1996.

Powering the Boxster was Porsche's new M96 liquid-cooled flat-six engine, the marque's first water-cooled, non-front mounted engine. Mid-mounted in the Boxster chassis, this configuration provided a low center of gravity, near-perfect weight distribution, and neutral handling. Delivering 201 horsepower and available with a choice of a 5-speed manual gearbox or Porsche's Tiptronic unit with manual capability, the first-generation Boxster could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 6.9 seconds and approach 150 mph. Now appreciated as a truly collectible Porsche model with its purity of design, performance, and excellent handling, the first-generation Boxster marks a compelling find for committed Porsche enthusiasts.

Offered with just two owners from new and 39,200 accumulated miles at the time of writing, this 1999 Porsche Boxter is a compelling first-generation example. Condition is simply outstanding throughout and colors are excellent, comprising Artic Silver paint over Boxster Red upholstery. Power and performance are delivered by the water-cooled, 2.5L "flat-6" engine, rated at 201 horsepower, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission/rear transaxle. Options and accessories include the Sport package and twin Speedster-style headrest fairings. A clean Carfax vehicle-history report is included with this excellent first-generation Boxster, which is freshly inspected, detailed, and ready to enjoy on your favorite stretch of open road. Contact us today and see it for yourself, obtain full details, and get ready to make it yours in time for the upcoming spring and summer show and driving seasons!
