Revitalized with new ownership, management, and financial resources by the late 1990s following the acquisition by Volkswagen AG, the iconic Bentley marque created what has to be the world's most luxurious 'Supercar' ever conceived. Based on a shortened and incredibly rigid chassis, the new Bentley Continental GT featured a twin-turbocharged and intercooled W-12 engine delivering 552 horsepower and 479 pounds-feet of torque. Reliability was built-in from the outset, with one Continental GT run at 175 mph over an 18,500-mile distance at Italy?s famous Nardo test track. The Continental GT?s hand-assembled W-12 engine, similar to a pair of V-6 engines sharing a common crankshaft, was built to withstand the rigors of boost levels ranging between 4.4 and 10.2 psi generated by the twin KKK Warner turbochargers. Power is delivered via a ZF six-speed automatic gearbox and 3.521 rear-axle ratio. The W-12's massive torque output is split evenly by the all-wheel drive system between the front and rear axles using a torque-sensing differential. Normal, Sport, and Tiptronic shift modes are available, with manual capability via competition-type shift paddles.
While its technical specifications and massive performance are certainly astounding, the Continental GT included Bentley's unwavering levels of style, luxury, and elegance to match.
