Following in the footsteps of five highly acclaimed generations of Mercedes-Benz SL sports models, the R231 line introduced in December 2011 had a very tough act to follow. The SL500 is the primary R231 model for the North American market, with its 4.7-liter DOHC V-8 engine putting down 429 horsepower with electronic fuel injection and intercooled twin turbochargers. Acceleration from rest to 60 mph requires just 4.1 seconds and while top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, Car and Driver road testers hit an indicated 159 mph. Handling the forward urge of the SL500 is electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering and huge disc brakes on all four corners.
